DR. Maarten Hajer
Welcome to my personal homepage.
While a lot of information can be found at my professional website at the University of Utrecht or of my team at the website of the Urban Futures Studio, and via my LinkedIn profile you may find this website helpful as well. It stores some items that I like personally but are hard to find at the internet, such as the video work ‘Agree to All’ or some publications meant from smaller audiences but that may interest others as well. It also includes a FAQ section, which provides answers to questions I often get via email. Hope you enjoy browsing the site!
Maarten Hajer is distinguished professor Urban Futures at the Utrecht University since October 2015. Before that he was professor of Public Policy at the University of Amsterdam (1998-2015) and Director-General of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL – Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving, 2008-2015). Hajer was curator of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) in 2016 and of Places of Hope, an exhibition and manifestation that was part of the programme of Leeuwarden/Fryslân Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018

Rio+20 as World Exhibition
Yes, I will be going to Rio. I am going to Rio to see the future. Because Rio+20 is more than a regular conference – it is a World Exhibition. Rio+20 is thematically synonymous with the future, but the meeting of world leaders takes place within the structures of the past. This means that making …
The Roads from Rio – Views from the World of Experts
At some point last Fall I realized I was booked in a string of international meetings, all in the lead up to the Rio+20 conference of June 20-22. I also realized that all the interesting views that I heard from my fellow experts, were often hardly known to people outside this circuit of experts. So …

A glimpse of Europe’s blue future
A couple of weeks ago I visited Iceland. It is home to vast quantities of renewable natural resources. The familiar tourist image of geysers, spouting steam and hot water into the air, brings the abstract idea of geothermal energy to life. Hot water and steam can be harnessed for heating homes and producing electricity. Apart …

Twitter as a tool for governance?
In 2009 I published Authoritative Governance, taking issue with the ‘dumbing down’ thesis on media and politics. According to this ‘dumbing down’ thesis we now live in an age that privileges style of content, in which the image has won from the text, the sound bite from the carefully crafted argument. The point of the …
Picnic Stories: Fix It!
Fix it! The Energetic Society as a New Perspective on Governance for a Clean Economy. Maarten Hajer on Fix it! The ambitious goal of a clean economy and a high-quality society can be achieved. …
Strong Stories
“Strong Stories. How the Dutch are reinventing spatial planning“ (010 Publishers, 2010) Spatial planning in the Netherlands involves a diverse range of partnerships between government bodies, centres of knowledge, the public, and organizations in the private sector. Experiments with interactive, development-oriented planning have been going on for some years, especially at the regional level. …
